ST. PAUL, Minn. – A new gun safety proposal approved in the Minnesota House would boost the price for purchasing and providing firearms to ineligible individuals who can possess them, also known as straw purchasing, by increasing the penalty from a gross misdemeanor to a felony.
Kevin Vick, CEO of Stock & Barrel, a Chanhassen and Eagan gun club, says lawmakers essentially “made something illegal, more illegal,” which doesn’t change anything for criminals.
Vick says another problem with the bill is that straw purchases are rarely ever prosecuted, as Federal Firearm Licenses largely just ignore the gun seeker and turn them away, leaving them free to go to the next shop.
